    PCL 5 Support

PCL 5 uses an escape-sequence-based command stream that is generally readable and can be modified to include custom printer commands.

Use PCL 5 when the output requires:

    • Custom printer options that use PJL or PCL escape sequences, including stapling and other finishing options

    • DocOrigin underlay feature (known as stitching), which inserts pages from an existing PCL 5 or PDF file into the generated output
    • Downloadable fonts

    • Image-based or printer-specific secure-printing font solutions

    • Proprietary resident-font systems, such as TROY security-printer fonts used for check signatures or images

    Margin Limitation

PCL 5 has limited support for content near the left and right edges of the page. Templates intended for PCL 5 output should use a 0.25 inch margin/gutter on the left and right page edge. If tighter margins are required and the target printer supports PCL 6, use PCL 6 output.
